Welcome to the weekly FML Spotlight! My name is Jeffery but you may know me better as Katniss Cinnaplex. Each week I'll be highlighting the top players in each of the public leagues (FML League, Monthly Matchup and Season Showdown) and tracking the race to the top of the leaderboards.
While the events of this past weekend are much more significant than the movie industry, I'll try to stay focused on the task at hand. Three new releases (possibly the last three for a couple of months) hit theaters this week. The Hunt came in well below its forecasted amount though having the best Rotten Tomatoes score of the new releases. Bloodshot and I Still Believe battled back and forth all weekend for 2nd place in box office as well as the top value of the week. With the actual figures reported on Monday, Bloodshot had outgrossed I Still Believe and captured the best performer (BP) bonus. Joining four screens of Bloodshot in the perfect cineplex (PC) are a screen of The Invisible Man and three screens of Fantasy Island for total earnings of $56,255,902 with bonuses.
After just two weeks we may have seen the end of the Spring season as we know it. Theaters all across the country are shutting down in an effort to maximize social distancing and prevent the spread of COVID-19. In a somewhat shocking development, only one player in the entire league was able to hit the PC in both weeks! This doesn't come as a huge surprise with only 15 players on the PC this week. Congratulations to our sole leader: Guyett! A total of 11 players are currently tied for second place before tiebreakers: Phil's Phun Phlicks, Athena, GH, MegaPlex Lestrange, Mr Hankey, Shenzi, Emperor Devil, The Way Back 8x Contingency Alt, Full Metal Cineplex, Devil, and The Good Plex.
With only one person in the lead you can deduce that Guyett is the only player on a current PC streak (2).
Heading over to the March contest we find the exact same scenario; with the new season starting the first week of March we see nearly the exact same top twelve lineup with three exceptions: Emperor Devil and Devil played different lineups in Monthly Matchup and aren't in the top 12, while Geegok takes one of the places tied for second (Geegok isn't in the Season Showdown league).
The standings will remain in place for now.
The FML League
The FML League is the one-stop, go-to league for all players in Fantasy Movie League. Each week brings us a new contest; ties are almost guaranteed so you really need to be on top of your tiebreaker game. The tiebreaker this week was to predict the second weekend gross for Onward: $10,601,952. You may wonder who in their right mind would predict a 73% drop for Pixar's Onward but you may be surprised. Ten players in FML were within $350,000 of the gross, including a league-best $95,585 from Draft Auction Cineplex. Out of the sixteen PCs in the FML league, twelve predicted a tiebreaker over $17 million. Jack's Smirking Multiplex and Enhanced Experiences both guessed around $14 million. Joe's Discount Movies had a great guess of $12.1 million but it wasn't close enough to beat out Alex's Sticky Floors guess of $11,798,315. With that guess along with the PC, Alex is this week's winner!
