FML Spotlight

Jeffery Barefoot

Welcome to the weekly FML Spotlight! My name is Jeffery but you may know me better as Katniss Cinnaplex. Each week I'll be highlighting the top players in each of the public leagues (FML League, Monthly Matchup and Season Showdown) and tracking the race to the top of the leaderboards.

Pixar released their 22nd feature film and 14th original film this weekend in Onward. While Onward didn't quite perform up to the Pixar standard, it did nearly match The Good Dinosaur's 2015 opening weekend. The Way Back also debuted this weekend and came in just above its forecasted gross. Due to the declining forecast, FML was a little lenient on the price for The Way Back, allowing it to be played on all eight screens. Thanks to the other top grossing films falling below expectations, The Way Back was able to nab the best performer (BP) bonus which led to the perfect cineplex (PC) sweep. This is the first 8x PC since Queen & Slim in week 13 of the Fall season and the ninth time in FML's history.

Season Showdown

For the first time in what seems like a lifetime we have a new name atop the season scoreboard! While technically 257 players are tied for first (including last season's champion Exxdee), we have tiebreakers to settle those positions out. After one week here are your top ten for season showdown: SKYplex, Billy Ocean's-8-plex, Biff, SammyP's Cineplex, Avender's Cineplex, Memories of Snowpiercer, jalberry92's Cineplex, Always be Closing, Fifty Shades of Film, Park's Pictures and Napalm. As a reminder, the top three places at the end of the season will win the following prizes. First place: one year of movie tickets for two (awarded in the form of a $1300 Fandango promotional code.) Second place: a $500 Fandango promo code. Third place: $250 Fandango promo code. Worth playing for?

The following players just hit their second straight PC! Congrats to Chief Brody, Jeremy's Picture Palace, Magical Sparkle Pony, Muuuuuurrrrph, PMWCC and The Coalition for Reason.

Monthly Matchup

March kicked off this week with 184 players leading the way. Playing The Way Back was the key for starting the month in a good position; the best lineup that didn't include at least one screen of it trails the PC by $27.5 million. While this seems like an enormous hole, stranger things have happened in FML land. Here are the top ten in Monthly Matchup after the first week: Billy Ocean's-8-plex, Biff, Avender's Cineplex, Memories of Snowpiercer, jalberry92's Cineplex, Napalm, the_dude01's cineplex, So Fresh & So Kreme, Sir Julius, and smb8199's Cineplex. The prizes for this contest include cash gift cards of $1,000, $250 and $100.

The FML League

The FML League is the one-stop, go-to league for all players in Fantasy Movie League. Each week brings us a new contest; ties are almost guaranteed so you really need to be on top of your tiebreaker game. The tiebreaker this week was to predict the opening weekend gross for Onward: $39,119,861. There were 372 PCs in the FML league (seriously guys, join the Season Showdown and Monthly Matchup leagues for more chances at prizes!) with many not including tiebreakers. The top 50 players all had tiebreakers within $4.28 million while the top 15 had a much closer $1.5 million difference. This week's winner, Beckham goes to the Movies, only missed the gross for Onward by $182,520! Congratulations!

This coming weekend players will be competing for signed figurines of My Spy's Dave Bautista and Bloodshot's Vin Diesel along with an FML "Winner" t-shirt. Good luck, and don't forget to set those tiebreakers!

Disclaimer: all winners eligibility must be confirmed by Fantasy Movie League before receiving prizes.
