FML Spotlight

Jeffery Barefoot

Hello fellow FMLers!

Welcome to the weekly FML Spotlight! My name is Jeffery but you may know me better as Katniss Cinnaplex. Each week I'll be highlighting the top players in each of the public leagues (FML League, Monthly Matchup and Season Showdown) and tracking the race to the top of the leaderboards.

Valentines Day, Presidents Day and post-Oscars expansions all factored in to one of the toughest weekends for FML. The odds of these three things happening the same weekend are pretty low and there wasn't really a good historical weekend to base your picks on. On top of all of those factors, four new movies released over the weekend! Sonic the Hedgehog, the latest video game adaptation, burst onto the scene eclipsing $70 million for the four-day weekend and passed Pokémon: Detective Pikachu for the highest opening weekend for a video game movie. The Photograph and Fantasy Island battled it out for third place; Fantasy Island came out just ahead with both films bringing in between 13-14 million. Downhill had the second-best value of the new releases but didn't factor into the perfect cineplex (PC). Parasite, coming off four Academy Awards including Best Picture, nearly doubled its theater count and easily captured the best performer (BP) bonus. Parasite took seven screens of the PC with Sonic the Hedgehog filling the last spot.

Season Showdown

As the season approaches the last two weeks, we find ourselves in exactly the same place. Among the top 100 ranked players a week ago only three unique lineups were played: two players tried six Jumanji: The Next Level along with Sonic, nine played three Birds of Prey, Bad Boys for Life and four screens of Parasite, and the other 89 played the PC. In the top 500 players there were 312 PCs! Regardless of the outcome, this would have been a great week to take a shot at making up ground. Had Jumanji been able to outperform Parasite, those few players would have vaulted up the standings. With only two weeks left don't be afraid to take a shot!

Most Frequent just secured their fifth consecutive perfect cineplex. If my records are correct, the record for longest PC streak is six. All eyes are on you, Llamrei.

Monthly Matchup

Last week, 40 players found themselves tied for the lead in the February contest. Even with 493 PCs this week, only 31 of the 40 have gone two-for-two. The top aggregate tiebreakers after two weeks belong to BBH Part Deux, Altra Magnus, RPA, and Merlin's Magical Multiplex.

The FML League

The FML League is the one-stop, go-to league for all players in Fantasy Movie League. Each week brings us a new contest; ties are almost guaranteed so you really need to be on top of your tiebreaker game. The tiebreaker this week was to predict the 4-day opening weekend gross for Sonic the Hedgehog: $70,002,074. This was quite the juxtaposition with last week's Birds of Prey tiebreaker. Last week there were only four PC players who went too low; this week only 16 of the top 100 tiebreakers were set too high. I say top 100 because, well, it would take all night to look through the 1,290 PCs! The top five players all were within $200k of the actual with Sean.Mercier11's Cineplex taking home the well-earned victory.

This coming weekend players will be competing for signed photos of Katie Holmes, Karen Gillan and Eiza Gonzalez along with an FML "Winner" t-shirt. Good luck, and don't forget to set those tiebreakers!

Disclaimer: all winners eligibility must be confirmed by Fantasy Movie League before receiving prizes.
