FML Spotlight

Jeffery Barefoot

Hello fellow FMLers!

Welcome to the weekly FML Spotlight! My name is Jeffery but you may know me better as Katniss Cinnaplex. Each week I'll be highlighting the top players in each of the public leagues (FML League, Monthly Matchup and Season Showdown) and tracking the race to the top of the leaderboards.

Holiday weekends always take us out of our groove, but it affects this game unlike any other factor. There are only a few times every year where we have to predict a four-day weekend and we just had the first of 2020. Bad Boys for Life took advantage of the long weekend and blew away all expectations on its way to the second-highest January opening weekend at $73 million. Dolittle also opened on Friday to middling reviews and topped out at $28 million for the four-day total. The two new releases took home the top two values with Bad Boys for Life earning the best performer (BP) bonus. The perfect cineplex consisted of two screens of Bad Boys for Life, two screens of Underwater, a screen of Parasite and two screens of Bombshell. Quick math will tell you that only comes to seven screens; the eighth screen, for the eleventh time in FML history (and first since 2018), was left blank! Even with the negative-$2M this lineup still came out ahead of any other lineup.

Season Showdown

This season continues to be dominated by the two Exxdee accounts. Though they didn't get the PC, they finished only around $800k behind the best lineup, and with a $30 million lead over third that's only a drop in the bucket. Everyone in the top 10 played the two screens of Bad Boys for Life that really mattered but the other screens were a jumbled mess with all ten missing the PC. The Executive maintained third place and is just ahead of Rubyplex, who moved up two spots for the second week in a row. Lucid Dreams Cineplex and Full Metal Cineplex were the casualties from Rubyplex's climb as they both fell one place. FMLPOD, WishcasteR and The Forest Again retained top 10 positions as they find themselves in 7th, 8th and 10th. Phil's Phun Phlicks! is the lone new face on the first page, taking over the vacancy left by The Good Plex (now 11th).

The Exxdee PC streak has now ended, along with everyone else. We'll check back in next week to see if anyone gets a new streak started.

Monthly Matchup

There's a new leader in Monthly Matchup! Bing Again! hit the PC this week and took the top spot from Exxdee by a miniscule $379k. The Exxdee accounts have played the same lineup every week and are the only two accounts tied in second. 2001: A Cineplex climbed to fourth place and is tied with Full Metal Cineplex. Marksteu4's Cineplx, Stillwater, WishcasteR, and RPA take up spots six through nine and are all within two million of the leader. Something Clever rounds out the top 10, moving up from 32nd a week ago.

The FML League

The FML League is the one-stop, go-to league for all players in Fantasy Movie League. Each week brings us a new contest; ties are almost guaranteed so you really need to be on top of your tiebreaker game. The tiebreaker this week was to predict the four-day opening weekend gross for Bad Boys for Life: $73,033,944. Only 42 players were able to nail this elusive PC and none of those were even within three million of the tiebreaker. They were hardly to blame as the pros had pegged an opening weekend around $40 million as recently as Thursday. This week's winner had a tiebreaker of $69,905,940 but that was close enough to win Blinkh87 the Bad Boys DVD signed by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Congratulations!

This coming weekend players will be competing for a Matthew McConaughey signed Dallas Buyers Club mini poster along with an FML "Winner" t-shirt. Good luck, and don't forget to set those tiebreakers!
