Hello fellow FMLers!
Welcome to the weekly FML Spotlight! My name is Jeffery but you may know me better as Katniss Cinnaplex. Each week I'll be highlighting the top players in each of the public leagues (FML League, Monthly Matchup and Season Showdown) and tracking the race to the top of the leaderboards.
It: Chapter Two was all the rage this week as the Stephen King sequel dominated the box office in its debut. In FML land, we had to choose which day(s) of It: Chapter 2 to use in our virtual cineplex. The Peanut Butter Falcon expanded into 61 new theaters and was the favorite to win best performer (BP). Throughout the weekend, the estimates had it in the lead just ahead of another expanding movie, Overcomer. When the actual results rolled in it was Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw that pulled ahead to win the BP bonus. Dora and the Lost City of Gold also increased from estimates and jumped to the second-best value. In the end, the perfect cineplex (PC) was four screens of the BP along with two Saturday screens of It: Chapter Two and two screens of Dora and the Lost City of Gold.
The fall season kicked off with a very rare PC. Only three players begin the season tied for the lead: Ekputman's Cineplex, Rapplex and James.Devlin's Cineplex. These three players are off to a great start to improve on their summer seasons where they finished in 3651st, 1104th and 1130th respectively. I took a look back at the week one leaders from previous seasons and let's just say things are looking pretty good. Here's where they finished their season ranked.
Season - Week 1 Leader - Final Position
1 Glacier Cinema - 1
2 Just Too High Strung Cinema - 16
3 Eve Kendall's Cineplex - 9
4 Darko Drive-In - 4
5 Billion Dollar Cineplex - 1
6 Oh Hai Cineplex - 1
7 AaroCo - 1
8 Boxed Candy - 1
9 20th Century Flops - 1
10 This wedding is horseshit! - 159
11 Sailor Moon's Crystal Cineplex - 6
12 Sean's House of Horrors - 4
13 Krucial Screening - DNF
14 Late Joining Cineplex - 367
15 Green Lantern Guy Cineplex - 176
16 Bighen1516 - 290
17 Damien Rocks - 130
*Note - It looks like the seasons before the box office tiebreaker was instituted used the final ranking as the week tiebreaker so those players were most likely just tied for the lead in week 1 of their season.
Since none of last week's PC players were able to repeat, the three above kick off the season with the longest streaks (1).
September's competition started up this week as well. Of the three players above, only Ekputman's Cineplex is a member of the monthly contest and they are alone at the top after one week. Tied for second place are Cowwith3legs and Kramsey's Cineplex who failed to use the two screens of Dora and the Lost City of Gold in their lineup. The September contest will run for four weeks for a shot at one of the three cash gift card prizes: $1,000, $250 and $100.
The FML League
The FML League is the one-stop, go-to league for all players in Fantasy Movie League. Each week brings us a new contest; ties are almost guaranteed so you really need to be on top of your tiebreaker game. The tiebreaker this week was to predict the Friday (including previews) box office gross for It: Chapter 2: $37,043,656. A normal week will bring a lot of drama with anywhere from 100 to 500 players with the PC. This week, however, there are only five players who had a shot at the prize. RAPPLEX came in fifth by default by not submitting a tiebreaker. Golffan004's Cineplex ended up taking fourth place with a guess $15 million too high. Next up was Jgault1990's Cineplex whose tiebreaker of $49,160,915 was still pretty far away. In second place was "Damn it, I had something for this!" (possibly a new name inspired by their current position) was still almost $10 million too high on their tiebreaker. The winner of the cast signed It: Chapter 2 script and an FML "Winner" t-shirt is - you guessed it, Ekputman's Cineplex! Congratulations on an excellent week!
This coming weekend players will be competing for a cast signed The Breakfast Club poster and an FML "Winner" t-shirt. Good luck, and don't forget to set those tiebreakers!
Disclaimer: all winners eligibility must be confirmed by Fantasy Movie League before receiving prizes.
