Hello fellow FMLers!
Welcome to the weekly FML Spotlight! My name is Jeffery but you may know me better as Katniss Cinnaplex. Each week I'll be highlighting the top players in all of the public leagues (FML League, Monthly Matchup and Season Showdown) and tracking the race to the top of the leaderboards.
Five new releases hit the slate this week but hit may not be the best term. Dora and the Lost City of Gold and The Kitchen failed to live up to expectations with each coming in significantly lower than the experts projected. The Art of Racing in the Rain had a pro forecast of $8 million and was able sneak past that with a gross of $8,137,584. The one new release that did hit was Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The collection of short stories-turned feature film nearly doubled the early tracking numbers en route to an easy best performer (BP) win. The perfect cineplex (PC) consisted of four screens of the BP, two screens of Spider-man: Far from Home and two screens of Annabelle Comes Home. This lineup only beat out the second-place lineup by $752,133.
The top of the leaderboard is so tight right now that the $5 million PC bonus shifted five players from the 11-15 range into the top ten. SKYNET: The Rise of the Machines maintains the slightest of leads ($409,881) over House Harkonnen while the rest of the top ten are still within $9 million! Newcomers into the top ten include: BSW's Alt, Particular Set of Movie Skills, Real Fake Films: Honky Grandma be Trippin' and Backseat Directing.
Only three players came into the week having played the PC two weeks in a row. Those three players all hit the PC again and keep the streak going. Congratulations to Bing Again!, Devil and Second Breakfast!
We are two weeks into the August contest and five players remain unblemished atop the scoreboard. Bing Again!, Plexy, Devil, Katniss Cinnaplex and Second Breakfast are facing off to see who can last three more weeks without missing a step as they seek to become the August Monthly Matchup Champion.
The FML League
The FML League is the one-stop, go-to league for all players in Fantasy Movie League. There is a new contest every week so, naturally, it is nearly impossible to win without an excellent tiebreaker score. The tiebreaker this week was to predict the second weekend box office gross for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw: $25,265,795. Two hundred and twenty-nine players were up to the challenge so this came down to a razor thin margin. The top twenty-three tiebreakers were within $500,000 of the actual. The top five players (with tiebreaker difference) were as follows:
T'isn't Me - $170,958
Elizablick's Cineplex - $166,011
SKYNET: The Rise of the Machines - $65,674
Rockinthe607's Awesomeplex - $40,285
Warpedsanity's Cineplex - $85
That's right, Warpedsanity's Cineplex had one of, if not THE best tiebreaker we have seen with a guess only off by $85. Congratulations are in order as Warpedsanity is now the proud new owner of a cast signed Dazed & Confused poster and an amazing FML "Winner" t-shirt!
This coming weekend players will be competing for a copy of Superbad: The Illustrated Moviebook signed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg as well as an FML "Winner" t-shirt. Good luck, and don't forget to set those tiebreakers!
Disclaimer: all winners eligibility must be confirmed by Fantasy Movie League before receiving prizes.
