Weekend Box Office Report

Phil Crone

Monster Mash

Coming into the weekend, very few people expected "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" to finish anywhere but at the top of the box office, but the result is less than desirable. With an opening weekend gross of $47,776,293, "Godzilla 2" wraps up the weekend with a debut nearly 50% of its 2014 predecessor. That's a pretty similar franchise trajectory with another franchise whose second movie opened the weekend after Memorial Day: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. "Out of the Shadows" opened with $35M after the original 2014 reboot debuted with $66M. Some franchises are tough to kill though, as a third TMNT movie is in development, and Godzilla already has his next date with "Godzilla vs. Kong" scheduled for March of next year.

Despite the underperformance from "Godzilla," it still finished midpack in FML $/Bux value. That's thanks in large part to the underperformance of, well, everything. If you use the FML Cineplex Builder, you know that every movie is loaded in at the same $/Bux value. This week's value was $102,500. Now, I may be wrong, but I believe this is the first time since the Cineplex Builder debuted that our Best Performer did not reach that bar. Rough week for all.

Failure to Launch

While it was a pretty tough week for all, it was an especially tough week for our 962 players who played the Most Played Cineplex of "Godzilla 2" x1/"Rocketman" x1/"Uglydolls" x6. The good news for those that did play "Rocketman" was that it did beat "Godzilla 2" in $/Bux value. The bad news? It only beat it by one place. Which was about seven places short of BP winning. As for "Uglydolls?" Well, the name fit as it grossed just $221k this weekend.

I Choose You, Pikachu!

As stated earlier, this was a rough weekend for the box office. Of the three new releases, only "Ma" came close to meeting expectations, and even that was iffy. Every holdover saw large drops as well, with only one holdover falling less than 50%. That one holdover was also your BP winner: "Pokemon Detective Pikachu." There really were no winners this weekend at the box office - only survivors. And "Pikachu" did the best at that, grossing $6,953,882, which was good for $100,781/bux and a shockingly easy BP win. It makes up the vast majority of your PC of "Aladdin" x1/"Pikachu" x7, which grossed $110,517,718 after including $19M in bonuses. Excellent job to the 21 players who hit the PC this weekend.

King Jorge The First

With this week marks the end of the Season Showdown, and congrats are in order to Jorge P for outlasting the competition and hanging on to win the Showdown! Season Showdown winners win free movies for a year - you could watch "Avengers: Endgame" every day between now and Bastille Day with that kinda cash! Enjoy it! Congrats also to Chalmskinn and The Force A-Nathan-s for rounding out the podium. (All winners are unofficial until confirmed by FML).

Darkest Hour

Two new wide releases hit the slate as FML kicks off the Summer Season. The first is the highly… something'ed end to Fox's version of the X-Men in "Dark Phoenix." The second is the, well let's only hope, end of the SLOPpy franchise with "The Secret Life of Pets 2." Set your lineups by Friday Noon Eastern/9 AM Pacific and we'll see you here next week!
