Coming Soon: 47 Meters Down Uncaged
If there's one thing that never fails me in Fantasy Movie League, it is summer shark movies. In 2016, we got "The Shallows." 2017 brought us "47 Meters Down." Then, in 2018 we got the biggest shark of all "The Meg." This week the teaser trailer was released for the next big fish movie, "47 Meters Down: Uncaged."
First it was called "48 Meters Down," then "47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter." Finally, the studio settled on "47 Meters Down: Uncaged." No matter what the title is, two things are true. First, I am a sucker for sharks and shark movies, no matter what the quality of the movie is. Second, I will annoy anyone who speaks British English, by repeatedly using meters instead of metres.
In "47 Meters Down: Uncaged," four young women decide to visit "a place that no tourist would ever find in a million years." While that may sound fun, in theory, this is a movie, and adventure trips never seem to work out well. In this case the obscure location are Mayan ruins that are located under the ocean. One character even claims that the site was home to human sacrifices.
Undeterred, the women decide to go diving, and encounter some seriously angry sharks. Due to the title of the movie, and the fact that the teaser opens with a man showing off a huge shark tooth, this doesn't come as a surprise. Fortunately, the women have a shark cage, but unfortunately, they don't have enough air to last long. Even though the plot isn't unexpected, shark movies are always good, suspenseful fun, which is what I am looking for in a summer flick.
"47 Meters Down: Uncaged" comes to theaters the weekend of August 16-18. While I'm not sure how it will fare in Fantasy Movie League, I think audiences will be down for swimming with the evil, toothy fishes.
