Coming Soon: Star Wars Episode IX

This week brought two interesting things my way. First, the State of Minnesota enjoyed an April storm featuring tan snow, courtesy of weather weirdness and dust from Texas. In addition to that, we also saw the drop of the teaser for 'Star Wars Episode IX,' which we now know is called "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker." I guess that is one disgusting thing and one interesting thing, but either way they are events that can't be ignored.

The trailer for "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" open with a scene of Rey standing in a dessert, similar to how "The Force Awakens" started with Finn in a similar environment. She takes out a lightsaber, which is speculated to be the one owned by Luke Skywalker, and proceeds to have a showdown with some sort of aircraft.

The scene ends with Rey doing a "Matrix" style flip, out of the way of the craft. While a lot of Star Wars fans dislike Rey's quick mastery of the Force, I am totally onboard with there being a highly talented female Jedi.

The preview is voiced by Luke Skywalker, talking about how things have been passed down to a new generation. In addition to Rey's scene, we get shots of all the other notable characters in this trilogy. Kylo Ren and some Storm Troopers make their way through a forest. Finn, Poe, and C-3PO engage are seen engaging in a fight. Billy Dee Williams has returned as Lando, and we get to see him piloting the Millennium Falcon with Chewbacca. There is also some footage of the late Carrie Fisher.

While we don't get any Porgs this time around, BB8 is joined by a new, little droid. You can always count on a new Star Wars movie to add a cute animal or robot into the mix in their new movies.

There are also some ominous things in the trailer for 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.' Someone is shown repairing Kylo Ren's helmet, which he destroyed in the last film. Then, as the teaser wraps up, our heroes find the wreckage of what appears to be the Death Star. Not only that, but as things fade to black, we hear the evil laughter of Emperor Palpatine. Did the emperor survive after all, or is this foreshadowing a new evil?

There has been a lot of discussion of the title of Episode IX, 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,' since this teaser was the first time it was revealed to the public. While is seems to be unpopular, I don't mind the title, since it keeps me guessing about the plot of this movie.

'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' comes to theaters the weekend of December 20-22. Like the rest of the world, I will be seeing it in the theaters opening weekend.
