Box Office Estimates for April 12 - 14

Todd Thatcher

It might seem like it every week... but THIS is a tough week. Todd from www.toddmthatcher.com here bringing you my take on the weekend ahead as the "Hellboy" reboot, Regina Hall comedy "Little", Laika Animation's "Missing Link", and college set romance "After" come before us for our FML consideration.

The chances of all four movies over or under performing are legit. "Hellboy" seems devoid of buzz and it comes after two critically appreciated superhero pics are still making money. I still have it earning high teens for a second place showing. That could change.

"Little" could be bigger than I think if it hits with its intended target audience. A gross similar to "What Men Want" (high teens) is totally feasible and that would put it in contention for the runner-up position. I currently have it in the low teens. That could change.

No Laika production has made less than $12 million out of the gate. "Missing Link" is getting fine reviews, but it could get lost in the family fare mix. I've also got it in the low teens, but that could change if I start to suspect it earns a studio low.

And then there's "After". The novel it's based on has its fans. The 30 million views of its YouTube trailer frightens me. I'm not sold yet, but I expect it to be a trendy selection and maybe for good reason. Again - my perspective could change.

I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if I can change, and you can change, EVERYBODY can change! And there could be some changing occurring this weekend... especially when Thursday previews hit.

For now... here's how I have the selected features performing:

"Shazam!" - $28.5 million
"Hellboy" - $18.4 million
"Little" - $14 million
"Missing Link" - $13.2 million
"Pet Sematary" - $12.1 million
"Dumbo" - $8.7 million
"Captain Marvel" - $7.6 million
"Us" - $6.2 million
"After" - $3.7 million
"The Best of Enemies" - $2.2 million
"Five Feet Apart" - $2 million
"Unplanned" - $1.5 million
"Wonder Park" - $977,000
"How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" - $965,000
"Hotel Mumbai" - $862,000

And that leaves me with a 2x play of "Shazam!", "Hellboy", a double dose of "Five Feet Apart", "Unplanned", and "Wonder Park" 2x. What say you?
