Weekend Box Office Report
In the 10 years prior to this, the Thanksgiving weekend box office winner went on to repeat in the doldrums weekend that followed seven times. 2018 will prove to be more of the norm as "Ralph Breaks the Internet" posts a repeat win for Disney, taking home $25,566,945 in its second weekend. That also pushed "Ralph 2" well past $100M domestically and is now the seventh-highest grossing movie for Walt Disney Animation Studios, just ahead of 2008's "Bolt" and now $70M behind… "Ralph 1!" It remains to be seen if "Ralph 2" can past its predecessor. If you ask me, I would say it passes "Ralph 1," but it may take until 2019.
Pricing was pretty kind to "Ralph 2" this weekend, so no wonder 596 players screened the Most Played Cineplex of "Ralph 2" x2/"Boy Erased" x5/"Nobody's Fool" x1. It was a nice play that worked two ways in that it had a great chance of being your PC with a Best Performer win from "Ralph 2" or "Boy Erased." However, with "Ralph 2" not living up to its relatively modest price expectations and "Boy Erased" finishing as the worst performer, those plans ended up going up in flames.
Grace Under Pressure
Some weeks, FML Pricing just knocks it out of the park with the whole slate. This week, 14 of the 15 movies were very well priced, giving us a narrow band and an exciting week… If it weren't for "The Possession of Hannah Grace." Priced for modest expectations, "Hannah Grace" blew those out of the stratosphere with a $6,401,744 opening weekend. That was good for $112,311/Bux and a BP win by almost $50K/Bux.
The more interesting debate this week proved to be for the first two slots in the PC, with players having a bevy of options. The popular picks proved to be "Ralph 2"/"Bohemian Rhapsody," "The Grinch"/"Creed 2," and "Ralph 2"/"Hannah Grace." The gap between the three options was miniscule, with the winner ultimately being "The Grinch"/"Creed 2," resulting in a PC gross of $89,976,297 after including $17M in bonuses. Good work to the 164 players who caught the final PC of the season!
In the Driver's Seat
With the end of November, we also come to the end of the Fall Season. Congrats are in order to BackseatDirecting for a resounding victory in the Fall Season! BSD crushed the competition with a whopping $20M victory over The Majestic Starkplex with Feyd Rautha rounding out the top 3. Congrats guys!
Blink-182 Minus 95
The November Monthly Contest also wrapped up this week, and congrats to Blink87 on holding off BackseatDirecting to win the Monthly Contest! Good work to Mark Watney Space Pirate for finishing on the podium as well.
And with that, it's time to start the ropes course that is Awards Season! This week, one contender and one classic enter the fray, with the platform release of "Vox Lux" and the 25th anniversary re-issue of "Schindler's List."
