Week 11 Recap: Who's Your Daddy?

Phil Crone

As we head into the final two weekends of the Fall season, we're seeing a lot of familiar faces in FML land, both in the Cineplexes and on the leaderboards.

Bringing the Thunder

No surprises in the overall box office as "Thor: Ragnarok" cruises to another easy victory with $57,078,306 in box office receipts. At $212M in domestic grosses racked up, it has already become the highest-grossing "Thor" movie out of the three. It's also pushed its way up to #12 on the list of domestic earnings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where it will likely surpass both "Doctor Strange" and "Captain America: Winter Soldier" by this time next weekend.

It Had to End Sometime

In what will almost assuredly be its final weekend in FML, the movie that defined the fall season, "It," appears in four screens of your Most Played Cineplex, along with one screen of "Thor: Ragnarok" and three screens of "A Bad Moms Christmas." The high-floor lineup needed one last "It" BP to have a shot at the Perfect Cineplex, but it was not meant to be. And so, we bid adieu to the Clown Prince of the FML Fall Season, which currently sits at #5 in 2017 grosses, #4 in all-time grosses for R rated movies, and #1 in all-time grosses for horror movies. Farewell Pennywise; we will see you again in 2019 I suppose.

Also worth noting with the Most Played Cineplex this weekend… It didn't have a bunch of blanks! Good job new players! You're already figuring out this game!

Daddy's Back

Any 2015 FML veterans know the tale of "Daddy's Home" all too well. While everyone scrambled to come up with the best way to fit "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" into their Cineplexes, along came Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg to upset the apple cart and crush its box office expectations. The shock was enough for me to dedicate an Insider article to it at the tail end of 2015.

So, when "Daddy's Home 2" came around, did we heed the warnings of the original? Well, it did appear in about 45 percent of all players' Cineplexes, so no one was exactly caught off guard. However, you needed to be one of the 8.7 percent of the player base willing to screen it the maximum three times to reap the real rewards of the weekend. Just like clockwork, "Daddy's Home 2" blew past its box office expectations, grossing $29,651,193, good for $111,471/Bux and a BP bonus. It also anchors your Perfect Cineplex of "Daddy's Home 2" x3/"A Bad Moms Christmas" x1/"Jigsaw" x2/Blade Runner 2049" x2. Well done to the 123 players who hit the PC, and well done to "Jigsaw," which is somehow 3-for-3 in PC appearances so far.

Thanks to the "Daddy's Home 2" shake-up, a lot of movement took place on the leaderboard. With two weeks to go, Spring 2017 Champion Boxed Candy now has a $12M lead over Darko Drive-In with Exxdee's No Bonus Plex back in third place. With two weeks to go, we'll see if Boxed Candy can become our first ever two time champion.

The Second Half League has a new leader, and it's none other than the People's Champion himself, the Fantasy Movie League Nerd. Odds are, you've used his Lineup Calculator more than once. He now has a $4M lead over Feyd Rautha and House Harkonnen. Finally, in the Winner Take All contest, CinEphilE Cinemas (JECTS) currently has a $2.5M advantage heading into the final weekend of that contest.

Five new movies hit the slate this weekend, and it's going to be a wild weekend as we head into the close of the Fall Season. Can "Justice League" deliver another blockbuster weekend in the Fall Season? Can "The Star" guide you to a Best Performer Bonus? Will "Lady Bird" or "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, MO" be FML darlings like they currently are on the specialty circuit? Will "Wonder" make me cry if I go see it this weekend? (Probably, and I will not be seeing it.) Also keep in mind that "Justice League" will be split this weekend, meaning you'll be screening it on a per day basis. Set your lineups by Friday Noon Eastern/9 AM Pacific and we'll see you here next week!
