Hey all - film festival season is almost here and that means a whole bunch of Oscar hopefuls premiering from the Toronto, Venice, and NY Film Festivals. They include Darkest Hour, mother!, Last Flag Flying, Downsizing, Suburbicon, Battle of the Sexes, Stronger, The Mountain Between Us, The Current War, and The Shape of Water. I thought it be wise to start a thread for all things Oscar 2017 discussion (thoughts on potential nominees, etc... as race begins to play out). I'm starting today with my Oscar Watch post on The Florida Project, which screened at Cannes earlier and is being talked up majorly for Willem Dafoe's third acting nomination. I'll post my thoughts on potential pictures as they screen as festivals and for critics in the coming months all in this particular thread and would encourage that those follow the awards derby to do the same!
Calling it now, Call Me By Your Name gets best picture. No way it doesn't.
Did a post on that one a while back. Certainly looks to be well in the mix
I would love if you were right CinEphilE. I think there's no way it won't get nominated for Picture, most likely Director, Screenplay, as well as others. But because of a gay film winning last year I say there's no way it wins. :( I'll be happy with a bunch of nominations though. Cannot wait for this movie. Have read the book 3 times and have been living and breathing everything this book/movie all year :D.
I think The Greatest Showman winds up taking it, much the way The King's Speech defeated a bunch of inventive movies in 2010.
Oscar Watch post in for The Disaster Artist. I say Franco stands fair shot at Actor, but that's likely about it
I think Disaster Artist, Suburbicon, Shape of Water and mother! will be too wacky for the academy.
I feel like Wonder Wheel is not gonna be anything special, Woody Allen hasn't had an Oscar hit in years and the cast is very meh.
Anyways Call Me By Your Name is a shoo in already. Also don't forget Wonderstruck, or Lady Bird, or Novitiate, or Molly's Game, or Three Billboards, or Mary Magdalene, or IMO the biggest two awards releases this year, The Papers and Phantom Thread.
And this is on top of strong movies already out like Wind River, Big Sick, Ghost Story (although this is too weird for the Academy anyway), Detroit, Dunkirk, and The Beguiled.
I think some of these Oscar bait movies releasing earlier in the fall are gonna miss out just because of the sheer quantity of strong movies this season (I;e Stronger, Breathe, Battle of the Sexes, Mountain between Us, Marshall, Victoria and Abdul). - Edited
I'll have oscar watch posts on all of them! I'll post the ones I've already done in the thread here shortly
Here's all the entries thus far -
The Three Billboards movie (i forget the full name) is gonna be a contender.
Ik it's unlikely but I hope Logan at least gets an acting and picture nod. It deserves it. Let's hope the campaign managers do a decent job.
