Specifically, an open-faced sandwich.

I created the ultimate sandwich* bracket.

*Based on a variety of sandwich definitions, including many that were mentioned in this thread.

Isn't a sandwich bread at the top and bread at the bottom

No, the real question is if pizza is a sandwich.

I say it depends on the pizza. A french bread pizza is closer to a sandwich than any other type. But, as a whole, I wouldn't consider a pizza a sandwich. I do consider a Hot Dog a sandwich though.

No, pizza is pizza. A sandwich consists of two slices of bread with various items in between. A hotdog is not a sandwich because a hotdog uses a special hotdog bun.

A sandwich doesn't need to have two slices of bread. Open-faced sandwiches are a very real thing.

I think we can safely count a calzone as a sandwich, and a pizza is just an unfolded calzone.
